WTF is my Gearscore Blog?

I can look up all my chars but the mage and warlock which gives me 500 saying unable to obtain information. I also couldn't look up a char from another server. I can look up some chars but not all like I use too. My question is why is this happening and can something to be done to fix it?

Unfortunately, there is nothing we can do. The problem is that the data source that Blizzard requires developers to use for detailed item information has not been updated to include some (all?) of the items from the patch 4.3 heroics.

This has been a problem for some time, but Blizzard hasn’t given any response.

We rolled out a new version of the site today. Things should be slightly faster and less broken, but we’ve simplified the feature-set in order to minimize the amount of maintenance going forward.

The most notable changes are the removal of realm rankings and the switch to the Disqus commenting system.

If you get an “unable to get item information” error, it is because Blizzard is not great about supporting the data API that they require third-party sites to use. They still have not updated it to include items from patch 4.3.

Armory Bug

The new ilevel 251 items that drop from the Elemental Invasion bosses are currently not reported by the Armory and show up as empty slots. As such, we cannot correctly calculate your gearscore if you are wearing any of these items.

This is a bug on Blizzard’s end and completely out of our control.

Chinese support re-enabled!

It appears that the Chinese armory has been upgraded to the WotLK version which allows us to pull the item information needed to calculate GearScore. As such we have reactivated support for Chinese characters and this time it is actually calculating proper scores!

Complete rankings are back!

After finally discovering the secret to proper database indexing I was able to turn rankings back to the way they were originally intended to be…with the inclusion of our full 750,000+ character database and the delivery of these results in real-time. This should help to add many characters to the ranking pages when looking over individual realms.

There are other improvements coming in the near future, but for now, this should help to improve the speed and quality of our rankings results!

Switching Servers!

We’ve finally decided to move on from our shared hosting roots! With the increase in power we hope to be able to display rankings for all characters once again instead of having to cap it at a hard number (which has currently been moved up to 100,000 by the way)…so be sure to look out for those changes coming soon.

Also: Please note that some comments might be lost during the switch. We might try to recover those comments within the next few days but most of our comments are quite doltish anyways…

Site Speed Increased

Pages on the site should finally be loading at acceptable speeds and hopefully the 500 error pages will disappear completely. The current fixes may end up being temporary as we continue to look into better ways to increase the speed of our rankings database, but for now here are the noticeable changes:

Only the top 50,000 characters will show up in the rankings…this number will hopefully be increased soon
The rankings shown are no longer in real time and are instead updated once a day at 2:45am EST.

Hopefully this brings a much needed noticeable improvement to site performance.

Page load times / 500 errors

We’ve been noticing that often times our page load times have grown to unreasonable levels, and that frequently a 500 page error is simply displayed. A large portion of this problem is simply due to growing pains, but we are working on upgrading our servers as I speak. Hopefully the site should be noticeably faster within the next couple of days.

Feature Changes

Raid progress bar - see which bosses and raids a character has downed
Class sorting on rankings - sort by any combination of classes on ranking pages
Milestones - history of a character’s previous gear scores are now displayed
Comment Avatars - a unique color for a comment poster’s IP address is shown next to each comment. Click the box to hide that IP’s comments site-wide.
Comment permalinks - found by clicking on the date next to comments
Paginated comments on character pages
Links to rankings from the top of character pages will now go to that character’s position in the world, region, realm
Links to rankings pages are now located on the front page
Hovering over the WIN/FAIL starburst will now show a character’s gear score difference from the average at their level
Several other UI improvements and visual tweaks

Performance

We have worked hard to make a number of server-side improvements/optimizations to make the site as fast as possible

With that said we have noticed there are times that our pages load slowly; we will continue to monitor this to see if any improvements to speed can be made

Please note: Chinese support was removed. I had not noticed when first building the site that the Chinese armory is still in Burning Crusade mode (WotLK has not been released yet in China apparently) and the Chinese armory does not currently provide the information necessary to calculate gear score.
